Anyone that has visited Craigslist.org knows what it’s like to venture into the wild wild west of the internet. Almost everyone has heard the story about the Craigs List Killer, Philip Markoff, the Boston University medical student who met and murdered women he met on Craigs list. Then there’s the story of the Times Square Bomber who bought a vehicle on Craigs List filled it with explosives and tried to blow up times square in Manhattan.
You can find just about anything on Crags List, you’ll find ads for jobs, dates, rides and roommates. Until recently they had an adult services section where escort services were advertised openly.
This helpful forum that us used by millions every day for perfectly legal and lawful purposes has also become a stomping grounds for Internet stalkers and blatant defamation and harassment of individuals and small businesses.
Craigs List has a section called rants and raves and this seems to be main location for this kind of online defamation and harassment. Many people think that they can write whatever they want in this section and they can never be identified. This is not true at all. It is possible to locate
or identify anyone posting on the Internet. Even on Craigs list rants and raves.
Obviously from the cases noted above law enforcement has little trouble tracing these ads back to killers and bombers but private investigators that are seasoned in Internet investigations can also trace these ads to locate and identify the authors.
There are many documented cases where private investigators have located people posting on online forums. Especially in cases of financial scams where a person posting an item for sale will steal the buyers money or a dishonest buyer will purchase an item using a bad or counterfeit check.
In cases of online scams, harassment and defamation not only can the author be located and identified but the whole process can be recorded and documented. This evidence can then be presented in court in either a civil or criminal case depending on the severity of the posts.
In some cases Internet stalkers have posted ads inviting people to visit a victims home, posting their full name and address. something as serious as that is a crime and should not be treated lightly.
If you are the victim of an Internet crime report it to the police. If they do not help. Hire a private investigator to find out the real name behind a Craig’s List Ad.
